We left the UK on Saturday, 11th March to travel to Las Palmas and visit the ‘Hospital Universitario de Gran Canaria Dr Negrín’ Professor Pedro C Lara and his team.
Head & Neck Cancer Centres Visited in 12 days
Hospital Universitario de Gran Canaria Dr Negrín
Barranco de la Ballena, s/n, 35010 Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Las Palmas, Spain
Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre
Massachusetts General Hospital ‘Department of Speech, Language and Swallowing Disorders’
Lowell General Hospital ‘Cancer Centre’
Quote of the trip, I truly believe that all the above centres have this vision in one form or another.
“Passion in wanting to drive patient care through the eyes of not only a quality medical team but that of the main focus … ‘the patient’. We believe in Patients First in everything we do. That takes a team to accomplish. I am proud to work with the Best Team. I learn something new every day from someone I cross paths with. I look forward to continuing to support quality care and focus on Head and Neck Cancer, growing a patient support group for past, present and future patients here in the Lowell and the surrounding area.” Claudia Antolini, Operation Director.
What a great advert for cigarettes ‘showing throat cancer‘ took this photo in Spain!

Thursday/Friday, 23rd & 24th March 2017
As we arrived at the main entrance and parked the car to off load, the valet service approached the car and offered to park the car, we later realised this is offered to all patients and family who arrive at the cancer centre.
We then made our way in to be greeted by William Courtney, Senior Media Relations Specialist who instantly made us feel welcomed to this wonderful place. William then took us all through to the Cancer Centre to be greeted by a group of ladies Welcoming us all to the centre.
My first thoughts were WOW what a greeting and what lovely people, and it can’t get better – how wrong I was!!!!
The day started at 10am with a tour of the Head & Neck department but this was no normal tour as ‘EVERYONE’ in the team came to greet us and make us feel very special. Patients and all the staff had massive SMILES and were so friendly.

Feeding Tube ‘When & Why’ plus ‘Tessa’s Kitchen Tips’
Tessa explained that the feeding peg should only be used as a last result and not fitted as standard practice,
Also Swallowing excesses and continue to eat during and post treatment is the way forward as this helps to maintain muscle use.

Today I visited Dr Shah at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre in New York, his attitude towards delivering the very best treatment to patients and returning them to a normal life post treatment is his paramount aim.
Dr Shah has special expertise in the surgical treatment of benign and malignant tumours in the head and neck area, including tumours of the mouth, pharynx, (throat), larynx, (voice box), sinuses, skull base, thyroid, parathyroid, and salivary glands as well as tumours of the skin, soft tissues, and bones.
Patient Interview (Jim)
WOW what a character, Jim is now 11 years a survivor and had a ‘total laryngectomy’ during his interview he made us cry but more importantly he made us laugh so much with his New York sense of humour.
Patient Interview (Jessica)
Firstly I need to tell you a little history about this wonderful woman, before her diagnoses Jessica was an Actress, Singer, Song Writer and her career was taking off big style with parts on Broadway and in film.
Picture below is Dr Shah & Michael Douglas at the World Head & Neck Confedrence.

I have now set off and on a tour of Cancer Centres in Spain and the US.
Saturday, 11th March at 6.45pm I arrived in Las Palmas and getting ready for a busy 14 days visiting Head & Neck Cancer Centres, Patients, Survivors, Health Professionals and other H&N Cancer Ambassadors returning to the UK early hours of Monday, 27th March.
To be told you have head or neck cancer is a heart stopping moment and is the start of a journey into the unknown. It takes over your life and affects eating, swallowing, and talking even socialising.
Everyone needs all the help they can get to find a way through it. There is a huge amount of good advice around but it needs gathering together which is why I am travelling the world.”
During March I will be visiting Gran Canaria, New York, Boston, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts to talk to doctors at top cancer treatment centres along with patients and their families.
I will be making two films about head and neck cancer to help raise the awareness worldwide.
On the 12th March my visit starts at the “Hospital Universitario de Gran Canaria Dr Negrín” in Las Palmas.
